Commercials
« on: January 30, 2009, 07:52:58 PM »
What do you think of commercials being included with OTR podcasts? I don't mean the sponsorships that are part of the show, I mean the regular old ads dropped in by the station or network. I don't care for them in general, though they do give a nice overview of what else was going on at the time. I do, though, enjoy the commercials from the 1970's as that was when I grew up and I often hear some that I remember or a forgotten ad campaign and the nostalgia factor kicks in.

If you mean the ORIGINAL commercials (like "Haaave you triiiiied...  Wheaties?, or "Maxwell House: Always... Good to the laaaaaaast -plunk- drop"), then yes I like them. It's fun to hear what and how they sold their products back in the day. In our digital world of computer animation and digital sound manipulation, it's fun to hear "the good old days"!

I agree - they're as much a part of the fun as the show itself   :)   And they still work, at least on me, after listening to the whole Superman series, I so want the darn thingies you could only find in kellog's cornflakes!   :o
I particularly love those about car oil and other products like that, they're very distant in time and utterly American  ;) :)   Nice!!

By the way, on the national tv channel here, up to a few years ago (now I wouldn't know, I stopped watching Italian channels) there was a special program that aired once a year called "La notte dei pubblivori" ("The night of commercialsivorous" (sorry for this poorr attempt at translating an invented word that was intended to mean "those who eat/live on commercials")).
That was a whole night - like 10 or 12 hours in a row - of commercials from every place and era. That wasn't just a lot of fun, but it also gave you an overview of what life was like in every decade in the various nations. It was fantastic  :)

In a way, it's the same thing with the commercials in the shows, as Jake pointed out  :)

For some reason, be it TV or radio, I find old commercials a turn off.

Well, they're better than modern commercials anyway  ;-)
Have you ever tried to analyze why you don't like them?

I don't know, I really can't say. As far as modern commercials, the oldies are surely better because there are just some commercials today that would make me throw out my TV if I couldn't zip past them with my TiVo.
