SyFy? WTF?
« on: July 02, 2009, 06:40:43 PM »

A new brand of entertainment is on the rise. On July 7th, Sci Fi Channel becomes Syfy and, when it does, your adventure begins. The first step will be easy: Imagine Greater. It means that at Syfy anything is possible. Everything you love will come along for the ride. And everything else will be exciting and new - including the look of the place!

Eh...OK.  Syfy?  As if texting and 140 character twitter "sentences" haven't done enough to damage the average monkey's ability to spell and use real words...

Then again these are tough financial times, and by getting rid of one letter who knows how much they'll save?

Shouldn't "Imagine Greater" really be Imagyn Greatyr...you know...for continuity's sake?

I give up....

Syfy will still be the home of bad b-grade movies. They should at least show classic, bad b-grade movies.

Don't worry, you're not alone, that's a problem throughout the world..  a sentence like "Dimmi che ci sei" is now, for the average Italian kid (or adult idiot), "Dmmi ke c 6"...

By the way, I find more and more often (alarmingly often, I should say) that a lot of native English speakers have become incapable of telling the difference between "you're sitting" and "your sitting" (the second, obviously wrong version is becoming increasingly common...)   :-\

Pretty sad - people once knew what power being able to read and write can give you...   :-\

Spiffy had a stunning moment of tone-deafness yesterday. Under the headline "Sci Fi Wire takes the holiday weekend off," and below a picture of the American flag, the site went to great pains to explain thier policy about deleting posts, what they will and won't allow in the comments section, and reaffirmed their rights to censor any post they deem objectionable. That includes simply any which criticise them. The horror of it all is that they chose to come out, pro-censorship, on the Fouth of July, Independance Day!

After I, and dozens of others, posted comments bascially yelling at them, they pulled the whole thing. Now there is only the note about taking the weekend off, the flag, and not a word about censorship.

Who is running SyFy? Who would come out pro-censorship on this holiday? Just another indication of how stupid the executives are.

(To be fair, they never mentioned the word "censorship" and it is, of course, their playground.)

So in other words once all the changes start taking place any negative comments will be deleted.  You will like the changes, or you will not be heard!  It is their prerogative, and since they are rebranding you can bet there will be some colorful comments, but that's the double edge sword of the internet.  They want forums to get people to their site and to become engaged in their programming, but you never know what those people are going to say.

It was bad timing to make that statement, but I wonder how much longer it will be before it goes back up?

It's all about the money of course.  A fact that is getting real tiresome...

It is well within their rights to moderate (and I'll use that polite term) however they wish. However, they relaunched the news site a few months back, well ahead of the rebranding. On the old site, they reported the news and posted comments, period. Now they have an attitude, refer to themselves in the third person, act as if they are insiders and operate much as a gossip site does. (Imagine a sci-fi Perez Hilton, if that isn't redundant.) Just when they become all snark, attitude, and criticism, they try to weed that out of the visitors. They come across very poorly.

And that is supposed to serve their existing community?  I would guess they want to attract a broader crowd.  And by that I mean rabble.  :)  Science Fiction news with an attitude...way to dumb down your site.  You know what really sucks?  It'll probably work!
