I lurk occasionally. Work has kept me busy, so I haven't visited as many sites as I could in the past.:)

I like the 1/2 hour length. It suits me fine as it takes me about 3 to 3 1/2 hours to walk round my mail delivery round.

Maybe we could ask Jim to put together another show and call it "The Delivery Round" - length: 3 hours

Sounds like we have similar listening methods, Old Time Fan.  I'm a water meter reader, so on my walking route days I get in a good 7 hours of podcast listening.  The thing is, I only listen to them at work, so when I go on vacation I have to make up something like 14 hours of podcasts to make up for the week I missed.

Matt, Oldtimefan, how do you guys feel about audio books? I'm not crazy about them, but with the time you can put in, you can both get through at least one in a normal day.

I've not listened to a lot of them but enjoyed what I've heard so far.  I have several classic horror short stories on some CD's from Librivox, which I listen to every now and then.  I recently found a free podcast that read a Robert E. Howard Conan novel, which I loved.  The only problem was Chapter 1 wasn't there and the final Chapter (22) was missing (there is one listed there as that chapter but it turned out to be the previous chapter again.  A mistake on the podcaster's part apparently).  I was able to find those two chapter for free online and read them, so it was worth the time.  I would listen to more if they weren't expensive.

I listened to Casino Royale a few months back. It was... OK.
Reading and listening are different skills and I don't feel like I interact with an audiobook the way I do with a real book.
On the other hand, I do see definite advantages to audio books.

I must admit that listening to somebody reading a book aloud defies my definition of satisfactory experience. Meaning I fall asleep in seven minutes of non-listening  :sad1:   Too bad, because it's very convenient, but I just can't seem to focus...   in fact, even when I find the time to visit Skinner's site and read some of his material, I actually read it, even if I occasionally simultaneously listen to it as well.
Funny, too, as I like it when somebody reads something for me aloud...  :confused4:

I guess it comes as no surprise that I'm a big fan of audiobooks - I'd still rather be holding a paperback in my hands, but I have a lot more opportunity to pop my earbuds in than I do to occupy both my hands and eyes.

1/2 hour for comedy and "silly horror" (Inner Sanctum, et al)
1/2 hour to 1 hour for serious drama

I think that sums it up fairly well.  I have to agree that for serious horror or drama, a little more time may be needed.  For light-hearted stories, anything longer that 30 minutes, and it starts getting repetitive and silly.

Richard Diamond and Philip Marlowe are always half an hour, so half an hour seems perfect. :toothy10:

There's no other end; but they never learn.

I have a stack of audio books to listen to. My trouble is i have so much podcasts to listen to. I should catch up this week as some of the podcasters are on holiday.

Which is one of those things that prove society is wrong...  I may be turning into a dreamer wishing for utopia, or maybe it's just that I've had so little time for myself for such a long time now, or that so many of the people in my life have been totally drained in every possible way by their jobs that they can't take it anymore, but I really can't accept anymore that people who don't want to work and could give humanity so much if they were given the opportunity are forced to waste so many precious hours working every freaking day.  Childish and idealistic, I know. Right now that's what I am, I guess...

I like the hour podcasts.  It usually takes me a couple hours to feed the birds.  I can listen to several one-half hour podcasts or one of the double ones Jim sometimes does.  Of course there is a pecking order--the Horror always comes first.  I like audio books but would never buy one.  There is a site called podiobooks.com that has free books in podcast form.  Some of them are okay.  I am not inclined to get an electronic reader.  There is nothing like the feel of a "real" book in my hands.  I just finished True Evil by Greg Isles.
